Certain artists manage to sustain long careers without
continuing record sales.
One such artist is the Welsh singer, Tammy
Jones. She enjoys a loyal following and performs in
cabaret and concerts around the world. Her early career was on
radio and television in her native Wales. She then hosted her own
show, called simply Tammy and appeared as a guest on UK shows with
such favorites as Benny Hill and Tom Jones. She had been discovered
through the popular talent show, Opportunity Knocks, winning six
times in a row in 1975. Her participation caused the most recorded
votes on the program.
Her biggest hit was in the 1970s when she reached number five in
the charts with Let Me Try Again. This was followed by a lesser hit
with Love's A Carousel, a song that was featured in a show inviting
the public to vote for the British entry into the Eurovision Song
contest. The song came halfway through the votes. In 1975, Tammy
Jones was the best selling female artist of the year due to her
international record sales.
Trained As An Opera Singer, But Pop and Country
Are A Favorite Too
Having trained as an opera singer at the prestigious Guildhall
School of Music in London, she displayed a liking for many forms of
music. In addition to pop and middle of the road, she likes to sing
country music and has gained many country fans with concerts and
recording sessions in Nashville. She also incorporates gospel and
comedy into her performance and covers songs from the 1950s to the
1970s. Tammy Jones likes to entertain in a variety of venues, from
intimate clubs and concert halls to cruise ships. She has sung for
her supper on P&O and Holland America Lines ships.
The world has been her stage, at home in British summer tours
and pantomimes and in front of British royalty at the Royal Command
Performance annual show. Her international following has taken her
to Europe, Australia, Israel, Africa, the USA and South America.
She now resides in New Zealand where she has become a citizen.
Tammy Jones will be remembered for her interpretations of standards
such as Wind Beneath My Wings and When a Child Is Born. Her
versions of traditional religious music are also popular, including
Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace. Country hits such as Crazy and
Little Bitty Tear have also sealed her reputation as an artist of
standing. There are compilation records available that reflect the
variety in her recording career.
